HOW THE SQUEEZE WORKS

Start with nitrogen. You can't grow corn without it, you can't make it yourself, and three of every four tons made in this country come from four companies. Potash and phosphate are the same story with different names: a handful of sellers, and nothing else to buy.

Fertilizer prices spiked in 2021 and 2022. There were reasons at the time: war, energy costs, shipping. Those reasons passed. The prices never came back down.

Nobody has explained why. That's what the FTC is investigating now. Investigators can pull the companies' records. They can't know where to look unless someone tells them.
